Shinjuku Station is the busiest transportation hub in the world and the main gateway to Tokyo’s western districts. Opened in 1885, it has grown alongside the city’s rapid expansion and now connects multiple lines, including JR East, Odakyu, Keio, Tokyo Metro, and Toei Subway. More than three million passengers pass through the station every day, and each exit offers a completely different atmosphere. The east exit leads to lively shopping and entertainment areas such as Kabukicho, Shinjuku Sanchome, and Lumine Est, which is filled with fashion boutiques and restaurants. The west exit opens to the skyscraper district and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, whose observation decks provide free panoramic views of the city. The south exit has a modern and sophisticated feel, home to Takashimaya Times Square, Shinjuku Southern Terrace, and the popular shopping complex NEWoMan. Inside the station, visitors will find numerous restaurants, cafés, and souvenir shops, making it convenient to spend time even on rainy days. Despite its enormous scale and maze-like structure, clear bilingual signs make it relatively easy for foreign travelers to navigate.
